National Assessment Agency for Advanced Skills Teachers (ASTs) and Excellent Teachers (ETs)
Advanced Skills Teachers (ASTs) and Excellent Teachers (ETs) are recognised as outstanding classroom practitioners. They are regarded as leaders of teaching and learning within their schools. To gain the status, aspirant ASTs and ETs must demonstrate that they meet the highest standards in teaching; they are externally assessed against the relevant professional standards.
VT Education and Skills is the National Assessment Agency for ASTs and ETs, carrying out all AST and ET assessments across England and Wales, on behalf of the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF).
Part of the AST role is to support colleagues in other schools in order to share good practice and raise standards, although they spend the majority of their time teaching their own designated pupils. ETs focus on improving the effectiveness of teaching and pupil attainment within their own school, and have no ‘outreach’ function.
